High quality and detailed network documentation can give excellent results when planning future water supply network investments and daily maintenance planning. Condition and value of the network can be defined very accurately, and this helps significantly when water company is thinking how and where available resources now and in future should be assigned. Also, yearly future investments can be planned so that network can be maintained without creating more renovation debt and risking high quality water distribution to end users. Optimizing capital expenses and operating expenses is the key to keep water quality high and costs as low as possible.

So, how to use KeyAqua efficiently and get measurable results when planning resource usage? This maintenance and investment process can be divided in three different phases which are described below.
First it is good to define goals what is wanted and what kind of attributes are needed to achieve these goals. For example, if water company wants to define condition of the network so that future investments and maintenance plans can be optimized, there is few ways how this can be done. If information what is available is very limited, meaning that only water duct locations, materials, diameters and construction years can be found in system, this information can be used to create simple visualizations about network condition. This approach is slightly theoretical due to small amount of information available.
Second and more advanced way is to use more information If that is available. Defining risk indexes and critical factors to all ducts or geographical areas is even better way to understand the real condition of the network. Using this information it is possible to create different detailed classification of ducts. In this case we can add more information like renovation information, critical consumer points, affected area when something happens, repair costs based on area or other attributes, threat level of buildings, importance of drinking water availability, ground material etc. More effort is needed when creating this kind of classification of ducts because different attributes have different weight values when determining duct conditions.
Visually highlighting these risk indexes and duct classification on map view significantly helps all personnel to understand the true condition of the network and especially most important areas to focus. When high risk ducts or duct lines are highlighted, this duct attribute information can be exported to excel to make even more detailed calculations how much investments are required to improve network condition.
When different visualizations regarding network condition are created, those can be shared with all necessary people including external stakeholders to share investment and maintenance needs. Justification for investments is clearly visible and based on facts when negotiating with management how much resources is possible to get in upcoming years to keep the network working.
